The Kuwaiti surgeon, Consultant of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Gynecologic Oncology, Dr. Waleed Al-Jassar, successfully removed a benign ovarian tumor weighing 18 kilograms from a patient in her sixties.
Al-Jassar stated that “the patient was suffering from abdominal bloating and difficulty in movement and breathing,” noting that “performing this delicate surgery took about 3 hours, during which two tumors were removed from the right and left ovaries.”
A specialized Kuwaiti medical team at the Maternity Hospital has successfully performed a rare surgery on a patient suffering from a massive ovarian tumor weighing approximately 33 kilograms in her left ovary. The patient has since been discharged in stable condition and has returned to her normal life, free of any health complications.
Dr. Waleed Al-Jassar, Consultant Gynecologic Oncologist and Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Kuwait University, who led the surgical team, told Al-Qabas that the 55-year-old Jordanian patient suffered from severe abdominal pain accompanied by significant swelling. Her condition was so advanced that she was unable to sleep or eat properly.
Dr. Al-Jassar noted that the patient decided to seek help after reading a similar case published in Al-Qabas a year ago, which prompted her to reach out to the doctors regarding the possibility of undergoing the procedure.
The surgical team, which included Dr. Wafaa Al-Duwaisan, conducted the necessary imaging and scans prior to the surgery, confirming that the tumor was located in the left ovary. The complex operation lasted approximately three hours, resulting in the total excision of the tumor, which weighed over 32.5 kilograms.
Following the procedure, the patient was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for recovery and close medical observation due to the delicate nature of the surgery.
Dr. Al-Jassar confirmed that the patient was discharged two days ago. He emphasized the readiness of Kuwaiti medical teams to perform such complex operations, supported by the availability of the latest medical equipment. He concluded by stating that the removal of a tumor of this weight and scale is considered the first of its kind in Kuwait.
